E-learning and distance education .. Necessity or tradition.

For discussion: Do you think that e-learning and distance education has become a necessity in our lives? Or that the tradition of the approach taken by European universities for the collection of financial? Or a means of certification from a distance? Is the potential of networks, Internet service providers capable to succeed in such an ambitious national project.?
