China's education to achieve excellence

China's education to achieve excellence
In the last month issued an international study on the performance of students of 65 countries in mathematics, science and reading. The Winner: Confucianism!
Shanghai topped the list in three areas far from the centers next. She also served communities with a legacy of Confucius Hallows education, three of the four centers the following, namely: Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea. Represented, while Finland is the only country in the Confucian group.
As for the United States, came in the fifteenth in reading, and the twenty-third in science and the thirty-first in mathematics.
For more than 20 years, I visited schools in China and Asia (also sent my children to school a short period in Japan, which also carry character Confucius), and spent much of that time either envious or obsessed. Will never forget when we withdrew our child from the nursery years, a Japanese, so that we can visit the United States, and we received a form may be filled, they included a question about «the reason for the proposed visit».
And education can thrive in China and the rest of Asia because it is a top priority and we have to learn a lot from it.
It must be recognized that sat on top of the Shanghai world ranking, does not represent China as a whole; Shanghai, where it has the best schools in the country. However, it is also true that China has conducted significant improvements to the school, which was awful in the rural areas.
Twenty years ago only, the children often drop out of primary schools in rural areas. Sometimes the teachers speak Mandarin language difficulty, which is theoretically a language of instruction.
Today, learn in high school most girls and boys, even in underdeveloped rural areas. And university education has become commonplace. And improve the level of teachers tremendously. Exceeds the level of the farmers of the village children ancestors of my wife, the American of Chinese origin, a poor village in southern China, the level of my children who are studying in public schools excellent New York area, in mathematics. This seems to be broadly true for athletes across the country.
In spite of the adoption of China's socialist system does not accept the layoffs, they excelled as amazing (better than America) in dealing with incompetent teachers. Chinese principles do not allow teachers to dispense easily, but they provide additional training for teachers less efficient, and if that does not work, push them to other jobs.
She told me that headmistress of a school in the city of Xi'an, which is floating around Pei's kindergarten her «can always convert to the teachers bad teachers gymnastics». In China is not a sports hall and the importance of games in schools.
The kindergarten another aspect of China's strength is the excellent education in early childhood, and usually begins at the age of two years. The only element in the already troubled educational system is the Chinese university system. Valaeliat of the third degree; and should be a national disgrace.
But the irony is that the Chinese themselves are not fans of their system a lot in school. The more you try to conduct an interview with the Chinese on the rules here, I hear rumblings of discontent rather than praise. Complain that many Chinese that their hard kill independent thought and creativity, and envy the American system, which bred self-reliance, and seeks to make education an attractive and not just a chore.
In Xi'an, I visited the school Joshin Yishong, and perhaps the best secondary schools in the city, and spoke Pthsr students and teachers to focus on the U.S. clubs, the arts and independent thinking. The chemistry teacher Hua Johunj: «We have to encourage creativity. We must learn from American schools ».
He says a friend of Guangdong Province that he would send his children to study in the United States because the local schools «fatal to creativity». He sent his son to another international school to escape something similar b «breeding programs duplicate patterns». The spread of private schools everywhere, and boasts many of which focus on creativity.
In my opinion, the self-criticisms are right, but I'm also a great admirer of the popularity of education, and a pledge to improve the system. In spite of that William Butler Yeats was right when he said, «Education is not filling a bucket; but glows flame», it is also true that by fanning the stove be easier if there is fuel in the bucket.
And most importantly, that the greatest strength of the elements of the system lies in the Chinese reverence for education in culture Almtogl Confucianism. In China, schools, teachers have great respect, and intelligent child is one of the most widely admired, not the talker or a clown chapter.
The Americans think that China's strategic challenge is in things like the new Chinese stealth aircraft. However, the real challenge is the rise of the educational system in China and what lies behind the passion for education. We do not need to turn to Confucianism, but we can raise the profile of education on our list of priorities without losing the creativity and independent thinking.
This is what we have done in 1957 after the Soviet Union launched the Sputnik satellite. We must turn the results of this new test, to Sputnik in our twenty-first century.
